Seasonal Fulfillment Center Associate

May 2019 • Newark, CA

What I liked

No interview, they hire anyone who can pass background and drug (saliva) test. Sick time, days off etc. all manageable from phone app. No need to call in sick, just punch it into your phone and stay home. Also easy to resign from the app and rehire next summer. If you stay for 90 days and convert to a permanent employee you get free dental and vision benefits.

What I wish was different

Sometimes the automated phone app and system of managing absences can feel impersonal and uncaring. Usually you can talk to HR to fix things if you had a serious emergency though.

Advice

It is what you make of it. Be positive and talk to people/network. You can progress and move up if you desire. There are plenty of opportunities to move up in the company. Otherwise if it’s just a summer job for you, it’s still a great place since there are no hard feelings if you need to quit and come back next summer. People do this all the time.

Business Analyst Intern

June - September 2019 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

There were a lot of fun activities and different events. There are plenty of good resources, help for interns, and they were flexible with start dates. It was a great learning experience and I grew as a person, leader, and analyst.

What I wish was different

You do not get to pick what team you are on, which would have been nice. However, I was lucky to work with other interns and I loved my coworkers.

Logistics Associate

June - July 2019 • Lawrenceville, GA

What I liked

The corporate culture, fast-paced environment, and ethical managers were a key part in my enjoyment working at Amazon.

What I wish was different

The white badge and blue badge policy needs to be more flexible to support vacation days and promotions.

Advice

Time management and interpersonal skills are vital to succeeding in this fast-paced corporate environment. I understand getting up at 5 AM and driving 30 minutes to the fulfillment center, but managing your time early on is key to long-term success.

Delivery Associate

June - August 2019 • Wantagh, NY

What I liked

While working as a Amazon Delivery Associate, I experienced what it was like to work within an Amazon factory. It was interesting to see how Amazon the company actually treated it employees, and how much precaution is taken each day to deliver each package.

What I wish was different

I wish the Amazon warehouse managers had a more diverse work experience. For example, all of the managers within the warehouse only came from working within the warehouse prior, and none of them have had any experience actually delivering packages. So when something went wrong on the road, it was hard for them to help the delivery drivers because they have never been in any situation like that.

Advice

Yes, while the pay is good, the hours are long and grueling, and often times the whole operation seems a bit disorganized. It appears that people from corporate give little heads up to the managers in charge, which makes it hard to adjust in an efficient and effective way.

Finance Intern

May - August 2019 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

Working in a high-impact, fast-paced environment.

What I wish was different

I wish I was given more direction with regards to my project. Initially, I had none. Moreover, I wish Amazon had hosted more intern events for finance interns. There were two, compared to the dozens provided for engineering interns.

Advice

Always leverage managers in your organization when verifying findings, framing a proposal, and developing a roadmap. Do more and work more than asked ALWAYS.

Sortation Associate

July - August 2019 • Sterling, VA

What I liked

I liked how friendly and approachable everyone was and how most of the assistant managers and ambassadors made it clear that they were there to help and not just boss you around. Although the work was a bit demanding at times, there was plenty of help for anyone who needed it.

What I wish was different

I wish a better job was done explaining how to do certain functions, like stowing, which is essentially required for every new employee. Going in to the first shift, there was a lot of confusion among my new coworkers and I; none of us really had a clear idea of what we were supposed to do. Eventually, we asked and got the answers we needed but I think a better job could have been done when it came to explaining what we had to do and how to do it.

Advice

Starting off, it can be confusing at times so don't be afraid to ask questions. They genuinely want you to succeed and grow when you are there so take advantage of everyone there to help you. Confusion at a job like this is normal so ask questions!

What I liked

The company really cares about the employees! Offering water, ice cream, and fun treats every day, for FREE!

What I wish was different

Amazon hires anyone who can pass the assessment online. This results in a mix of people. I wish some of people would be more understanding and work harder.

Advice

Amazon is an amazing company, but not for the frail. It was a lot of heavy lifting, but overall it was very much worth it!

What I wish was different

I wish they had less focus on metrics and reports and more focus on people leadership and engagement
