Drilling and Completions Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Houston, TX

What I liked

The internship was well organized and interns were well supported by the organization.

What I wish was different

I didn't connect with the people with whom I worked, which made it hard to enjoy the job from day to day. This was my second internship with Chevron, however, and in my first internship, I loved the folks with whom I worked. The take away is that your milage may really vary when you work for a large company.

Advice

When you are deciding what jobs to apply to or choosing between offers, consider what the job will actually be- what your team will work on, what your responsibilities will be, etc. It is easy to get caught up in a the idea of a "good job", and accept a position that is not actually a good job FOR YOU. Also consider what the full time job would look like if you were offered a return offer. For example: a Drilling and Completions intern is not often sent to the field, but full time employees spend 2 weeks at a time living in remote locations far from their "home bases" (therefore far from their family/spouse/children/friends) for the first 4-5 years of their careers. Be honest about what lifestyle you want to live, and don't choose positions which set you up for a life you aren't interested in.

Cyber security analyst intern

May - August 2018 • San Ramon, CA

What I liked

I had the opportunity to travel to San Ramon, CA (Bay Area) to intern with Chevron. I really like Chevron’s culture. Chevron values diversity and inclusion which I really felt as an intern. Everyone was really helpful through my internship. I’ve gained lots of insite on application security within the enterprise. Along with learning, Chevron hosts many intern events so there is many opportunities to interact with other interns.

What I wish was different

I wished I would have lived with another intern or Chevron employee. Costs of living in California is really expensive.

Advice

Always be open to getting out of your comfort zone. Make good relationships with your team and coworkers. Also don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek help if you need it.

MCBU Land Intern

May - August 2018 • Midland, TX

What I liked

I was afforded the opportunity to take on several hands on projects that were value adding as well as great learning experiences. Chevron did a great job of giving me exposure to many different aspects of Land work, as well as the many moving parts of working for a fully integrated oil and gas company.

What I wish was different

I was the only intern in the Land department in Midland, and I think I would've had an even better experience if I shared it with another intern.

Advice

Take on every possible side project that comes up, as this is one of the major areas that allowed me to grow in conjunction with my core projects.

Process Engineer

June - August 2019 • El Segundo, CA

What I liked

The exposure to such a big industry. This facility was huge with all equipment in all chemical engineering principles that are studied in school. The people were kind and helpful in this learning journey. The location was beautiful. The pay was highly competitive. We even got a chance to meet with the CEO of the company and discuss important future goals of the company in the energy sector. Nothing more you can really ask for in an awesome internship.

What I wish was different

Longer experience. Some of the weeks did not include working on site. Just wished I could have had a little more time getting more in depth learning of individual chemical engineering processes and operator relations.

Advice

Come in humble about your schooling knowledge. Although the same principles are using in industry, there is a lot of experience and knowledge operators bring to the table that school does not provide. Learn as much as you can, and try to see the big picture of the industry and operations.
