What I liked

I work in the OR Supply Chain and I liked how helpful everyone was when I was being trained. They helped answer question that were sometimes repetitive.

What I wish was different

I had be given a job that was normally for people with more experience . I was kind of thrown into the job and had to learn fast. I wish that I had eased into it a little better.

Advice

It is a fast paced environment and there is a lot of information to take in but don't give up. It'll get easier and fun when you know what you're doing!

Summer 10 Intership

What I liked

The unit I applied to was very friendly and taught me so much over the course of ten weeks. The nurses were so helpful will all of my questions. As I was hired on after the internship, I continue to grow and develop skills in nursing. I am so thankful for this amazing opportunity and cannot thank the staff enough!

What I wish was different

The only thing that I wish was different was being switched from hourly to salary in order to receive the benefits from the hospital.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

What I liked

I loved the variety of projects I work on. The people are extremely intelligent, yet very helpful and kind. I've had a lot of room to grow as a researcher and student here. I also like being on stipend.

What I wish was different

Getting paid monthly can sometimes be frustrating, but that's just how the hospital works for researchers.

Advice

Give it your all on the job. The more work you put into projects, the more you get out of it. I have been published multiple times due to my hard work.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

June - August 2019 • Iowa City, IA

What I liked

I enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about how neuroscience is deeply integrated within the average hospital scene regarding both research and clinical. I was able to shadow numerous doctors in both pediatrics and also in neuropsychology. The main aspect of my volunteering was based upon working with MRI scans and looking at the lesions of the patients and making correlations regarding the different deficits that the patients may experience. I also worked with analyzing the biomarkers of audio questionnaires of severely depressed patients and their control counterparts. This experience has helped me gain a better understanding of what I would like to do with my future and has also helped me determine that neuroscience is the perfect major for me.

What I wish was different

I only have a few complaints about the internship. The first being that it was very hard to find affordable parking but that is often a common concern being in the Iowa City area. I also did not like how there was not always a constant flow of work for me to do. It seems that some days I would have lots to do where others I was sent home early.

Advice

I would advise to seek out the advice of the head doctors as much as possible since there is much to be learned from them. I would also say to make sure to try and experience as much as possible in your time there. I was able to watch some amazing medical procedures such as MRI scans, evaluations, rounds throughout the hospital, and much more.

I liked all aspects about this position.

Advice

Be diligent. Slacking off and not giving your all will reflect poorly on you, the department, and the entire hospital.

September 2018 • Iowa City, IA

What I liked

I like being able to talk to everyone who comes to the front desk. There’s always something to be done. I have been able to see really neat future medical devices also.

What I wish was different

Honestly I think that this job was everything I had imagined.

Advice

It has been an amazing experience. I have learned a lot about the medical field as well as the business world and how they overlap. I highly recommend getting a job surrounding your field of interest because it will help you officially decide if that’s what you want to do for a future career. Not only that, but it gives you experiences you wouldn’t have been able to have without the job.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

May - August 2019 • Iowa City, IA

What I liked

I love working at the hospital. At any hospital, patients come first so there was always a sense of urgency to fix problems. Workers never wanted to exact a price on people who made mistakes and were always very helpful whenever problems arose. I liked working with the patients especially in the research role we had. Research study participants are excited to help when looking for treatments and cures for their disease.

What I wish was different

As a research assistant a majority of my job was on paper and the computer. I was in charge of prep material for research visits and the data entry after the visits. I wish I had helped with more hands on help during the visits. If I asked I was able to shadow the Principle investigator during certain visits which was always very informative.

Advice

Learn as much as you can. Don't just ask what you can do to help the study, ask why the study is being performed and how it works. You will meet all sorts of coworkers in the hospital who will be able to put in a good word for you in a number of places. Get to know your patients.

Pharmacy Technician

June 2020 • Iowa City, IA

What I liked

I really liked the welcoming environment, which was very friendly and a lot more enjoyable compared to the other departments I worked for at UIHC. I like the fast pace environments and how all the work is very hands on. Scheduling is also very flexible, and they give you a lot of training shifts so you are fully comfortable in working the shifts alone.

What I wish was different

I wish the shifts were shorter because the shifts are 8 hours long and the only major drawback.

Advice

Apply in the summer because it is a lot easier to learn the shifts when they are back to back compared to during the school year when you can only work about 2 shifts a week (max 20 hours)

Volunteer - Mother/Baby Unit

January 2019 • Iowa City, IA

What I liked

I got to help take care of new mothers and get them whatever they needed during their recovery, which was really rewarding. When the moms were sleeping or getting tests done, I got to hold the new babies in the nursery, which always made my heart melt.

What I wish was different

I wish their were more tasks that volunteers could do, or a way to work up to being able to do more things. There are only a certain few tasks you can cycle through, and if their are no babies in the nursery when you've finished your tasks all you can really do is sit around.

Advice

Don't be afraid to talk to people and ask questions! Most people are happy to give an answer and if they really don't have time, they are very nice about letting you know.

Volunteer

January - May 2019 • Iowa City, IA

What I liked

I liked the opportunity to work with patients and staff around the hospital. It gave me insight to UIHC that I wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

What I wish was different

I wish my schedule had given me the opportunity to volunteer in a different unit.

Advice

Make the most out of volunteering at a hospital if you choose to do so. It's not the same as a job or clinical internship, but it definitely gives you a "heads up" as to what you might see.
