Family Nurse Practitioner

Key Responsibilities: 

As a Family Nurse Practitioner in the Navy, your key responsibilities will include: 

  • Comprehensive Primary Care: Provide wellness checkups, preventative care, and manage acute and chronic conditions across all age groups, from infants to adults.
  • Diagnosis and Treatment: Assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of illnesses and health conditions in individuals and families.
  • Health Education: Educate families on various health topics, including disease prevention, nutrition, safety, and lifestyle modifications.
  • Medication Prescription: Prescribe medications within your scope of practice to treat common health conditions.
  • Collaboration: Work collaboratively with physicians and other healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive and effective patient care.
  • Deployment Readiness: Be prepared to deploy in support of military operations, including overseas assignments and humanitarian missions.

Qualifications: 

  • Education: Minimum of Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a Family Nurse Practitioner specialization.
  • Licensure: Valid and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license with certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner.
  • Military Training: Completion of Navy Officer Development School.
  • Clinical Expertise: Strong clinical skills in patient assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively with individuals and families across diverse backgrounds.
  • Leadership Skills: Ability to lead teams and manage patient care in fast-paced, dynamic healthcare environments.
  • Must have a master’s or doctorate degree from an accredited program and passed the certification exam from a professional specialty organization.

Work Settings: 

  • Naval Hospitals and Clinics: Provide primary care to military dependents at Navy medical facilities.
  • Military Bases Overseas: Serve at international locations where military families reside.
  • Deployments: Provide medical care to service members and their families during combat operations or humanitarian missions.
