Senior Orientation Lead, Student Life

 

Position Type: Federal Work Study or Non-Work Study

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: 

  • Work closely with the Dean of Students Office staff with details of activities.
  • Assign duties to leaders.
  • Assist with planning and implementation of Spring and Fall Training of Orientation Leaders.
  • Assign Residence Hall for first-year students participating in SOAR.
  • Shopping for supplies with Student Affairs designee.
  • Managing the use of facilities and equipment as part of the orientation experience.
  • Recruit, select, and train Orientation Leaders.
  • Hold accountable the Orientation Leaders to the requirements of their positions.
  • Acquaint first-year students with the policies, procedures, and resources of the University of Detroit Mercy.
  • Foster a positive transition to campus life for new students by reducing feelings of anxiety and self-doubt by creating a comfortable atmosphere that facilitates an open exchange of information.

 

Requirements

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 3.0 grade point average
  • Two letters of recommendation were completed.
  • Served as an Orientation Leader for at least one year
  • No disciplinary sanctions
  • Full-time student
  • Effective communication skills
  • Problem-solving abilities
  • Familiarity with university resources, services, and degree units
  • Energy and enthusiasm
  • Pride in being a Detroit Mercy student
  • A desire to work collaboratively with students, families, faculty, and staff
  • Dedication and flexibility.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Adhere to professional and ethical standards of conduct, including all University, local, state, and federal laws and regulations and program policies.
  • The Orientation Director will be expected to represent the college, including the Residence Halls, Greek Life, and the many other campus offices and resources, in a positive and unbiased manner, regardless of personal affiliations.
  • Project him/herself as a role model who exemplifies strong academic decision-making and a balanced lifestyle.
  • Set the standard for all orientation staff members and new students.
  • Relate and interact well with students, parents, faculty, and staff.
  • Conduct activities that educate new students about social, academic, and personal skills to increase new student success at the University of Detroit Mercy.
  • The Orientation Program is an alcohol-free program. The Directors are expected to hold the Orientation Leaders to the same standard.
  • Work as a responsible team member and remain flexible regarding working hours and conditions.
