Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Peer Educator for the Nurse Anesthesiology Program provides academic, simulation, and learner-support services for 1st and 2nd year SRNAs. This role is intended for high-performing students who are in excellent clinical standing and on track to meet all required clinical hours. The Peer Educator assists faculty by responding to content questions, leading review sessions, supporting simulation, and helping students who need remediation or individualized study planning. Candidates must be willing to work weekdays as well as occasional weekends and evening hours as needed. The position includes training in group facilitation, tutoring, and mentoring strategies.
This position is hourly and structured around the SRNA’s academic and clinical schedule (with possible clinical release time).
Key Responsibilities
Academic Support
- Respond to course-related and content-specific student questions in a timely, accurate, and professional manner.
- Conduct structured review sessions prior to exams, including content summaries, practice questions, and Q&A.
- Meet individually with students post-exam to clarify misunderstandings, reinforce key concepts, and promote deeper learning.
Student Remediation and Success Planning
- Support students who score below the passing threshold in any course by providing additional academic assistance.
- Collaborate with these students to develop individualized study plans and evidence-based learning strategies.
- Follow up regularly to monitor progress and provide ongoing coaching.
Simulation Support
- Help facilitate one simulation session per month, including scenario setup, assistance during scenarios, and participation in debriefing.
- Work collaboratively with faculty and simulation staff to ensure simulation objectives are met.
- Receive possible clinical release time to support required simulation involvement.
Faculty Collaboration
- Meet with assigned faculty once per month to discuss student needs, identify content areas requiring extra support, and plan upcoming review sessions or remediation activities.
- Communicate trends, recurring questions, or challenges students are experiencing so faculty can adjust instruction as needed.
- Maintain open and professional communication with faculty regarding academic support strategies.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be enrolled at UDM as a 3rd-year Student Registered Nurse Anesthetist (SRNA).
- Must be in good clinical standing and making appropriate progress toward completion of all required clinical hours and case types.
- Strong academic performance (a grade of B or higher) and mastery of relevant course content.
- Available for 3-10 hours weekly during the semester (Fall, Winter, Summer)
- Attend training at the start of Fall and Winter (which may be scheduled during school breaks and/or weekends)
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and teaching skills.
- Knowledgeable of other student support services available to students at Detroit Mercy (training will be provided to supplement existing knowledge of Detroit Mercy resources).

- Maintain good clinical standing and demonstrate excellence in communication, professionalism, and leadership.
- Uphold confidentiality and integrity in working with students’ academic and clinical performance.
- Serve as a positive role model for professionalism, academic responsibility, and clinical readiness.
Preferred Qualifications.
- Prior teaching, tutoring, mentoring, or simulation experience preferred but not required.
Anticipated Schedule:
- 3-10 hours weekly during the semester
