JOB SUMMARY: The Engineering Student Intern – Quality & Manufacturing Systems will support and actively participate in the implementation and continuous improvement of Unilock’s Quality Management System (QMS) within a manufacturing environment. This summer role is designed for students pursuing degrees in Industrial Engineering or Mechanical Engineering who are interested in applying engineering fundamentals to real-world manufacturing, quality, and process improvement challenges.
The intern will work closely with Quality, Engineering, and Operations teams to analyze manufacturing processes, support quality assurance activities, and contribute to initiatives focused on improving first-pass yield, reducing defects, and enhancing customer satisfaction. This position offers hands-on exposure to plant operations, structured problem solving, process mapping, audits, and data-driven decision-making within a building products manufacturing environment.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Quality Management System (QMS) Support
- Participate in the rollout and continuous improvement of a pilot Quality Management System (QMS)
- Assist in defining, documenting, and maintaining quality standards, defect definitions, and standard work instructions
- Support training activities related to QMS processes and quality expectations
Manufacturing Process Mapping & Analysis
- Assist with process mapping of manufacturing operations, from raw materials through finished product
- Help identify process gaps, quality risk points, and opportunities for standardization
- Support updates to process maps and documentation as improvements are implemented
Quality Assurance & Audits
- Participate in quality assurance testing and dock audits
- Support layered audit activities and follow-up on corrective actions
- Assist with preparation and analysis for monthly quality performance reviews
Data Collection & Performance Tracking
- Collect, analyze, and summarize quality and defect data using established tracking systems
- Support defect trend analysis and reporting related to first-pass yield and cost of poor quality
- Assist in maintaining visual management tools and performance dashboards
Continuous Improvement & Problem Solving
- Support structured problem-solving activities related to defects, rework, and yield losses
- Participate in root cause analysis and corrective action development
Contribute to improvement projects aimed at increasing first-pass yield and reducing waste
Learning Opportunities

QUALIFICATIONS / COMPETENCIES
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline
- Strong interest in manufacturing, quality systems, and process improvement
- Ability to analyze data, document processes, and communicate findings clearly
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and basic data analysis tools
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
- Willingness to work in a plant/manufacturing environment
- Curiosity, initiative, and a desire to learn through hands-on experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior internship, co-op, or coursework related to manufacturing or quality
- Familiarity with Lean, Six Sigma, or structured problem-solving concepts
- Experience with process mapping or technical documentation
