Community Development Intern
The Village of Round Lake is seeking a Community Development Intern for Summer 2026. This hands-on internship provides meaningful experience in planning, zoning, community outreach, and local government operations. The intern will be a valued member of the Community Development Department and will work closely with staff on projects that directly impact the Village.
Under the general supervision of the Director of Community Development, the Community Development Intern will assist with a variety of planning and community development functions, including zoning, special projects, events, research, and administrative support. The primary purpose of this position is to provide professional development for individuals interested in a career in planning or community development.
Anticipated Projects
Projects may vary based on interest and department needs and may include:
- Assisting with planning and implementation of the Downtown Car Show, including event promotion, sponsor and volunteer outreach, event-day support, photography, and coordination of judges and awards
- Supporting proactive code enforcement efforts such as property monitoring, grass mowing violations, and address number verification
- Taking photographs for newsletters, the Village website, and future communications; drafting newsletter articles and assisting with website content updates
- Organizing and reviewing development files in accordance with State Records Retention requirements, including scanning and logging plats and engineering plans
- Providing customer service assistance at the counter or by phone related to building permits, inspections, and general inquiries
- Conducting research on planning and development topics as needed
Required Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a college or university pursuing a graduate, undergraduate, or associate degree in urban planning, architecture, public administration, economic development, geography, GIS, or a closely related field
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Valid driver’s license required
Internship Details
- Seasonal position: May–August (flexible start/end dates)
- Up to 40 hours per week, Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
- In-person position
- Starting wage: $17.00 per hour
