Pool Lifeguard
PURPOSE OF THE CLASSIFICATION: Under direction is responsible for the operation of several outdoor pools, ensuring the safety of patrons, and upholding the City of Tulsa and Tulsa Parks policies and procedures, and performs other related assigned duties.
ESSENTIAL TASKS:
- Works to prevent accidents and eliminate hazards in and around the pool and deck areas to provide an enjoyable experience for the public
- Responds quickly to emergency situations and administers first aid to accident victims, when needed
- Communicates with the public and City staff if additional assistance or equipment is needed
- Monitors pool zones in assigned areas for infractions or safety concerns
- Enforces rule and regulations courteously but firmly
- Inspects the pool and pool grounds daily for any safety issues or repairs needed to ensure the health and safety of patrons
- Educates patrons and informs them of the purpose and need for rules and regulations
- Monitors and cleans the pool, bath house and pool fence
- May be required to temporarily guard other pools
- Focuses on creating, developing, and maintaining a sense of teamwork among lifeguards
- Must report to work on a regular and timely basis

QUALIFICATIONS:
Training and Experience: Must meet the following criteria:
- Must be at least 76 years old at time of employment; and,
- Possession of a current CPR, First Aid, AED and Life Guarding Certificates; and,
- Successful completion of the City of Tulsa Parks Department Water Test.
- Swim instructors must possess current CPR, First Aid, AED and Water Safety Instructing certificates.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
Knowledge of:
- Water safety
- Basic rescue techniques, first aid, CPR and AED
- Best practices of lifeguard surveillance and continuous and systematic observation
Ability to:
- Enforce pool policies while providing a high level of customer service to patrons
- Display a positive attitude for all patrons and staff
- Quickly assess situations and make informed decisions
- Work as a team with other lifeguards, staff and management
- Positively promote the City of Tulsa and Tulsa Parks to peersand patrons
- Follow directions quickly
- Respond quickly and use good judgement
Skill in:
- Attention to detail, not easily distracted, and commitment to safety
- Communicating across a diverse group of internal and external customers professionally to achieve the goals of Tulsa Parks.
Physical Requirements: Physical requirements include arm and finger dexterity enough to use a keyboard and telephone; occasional carrying and pushing up to 50 pounds; may be subject to walking, standing, sitting, running, reaching, balancing, bending, handling and climbing; and vision, speech and hearing sufficient to perform the essential tasks.
Licenses and Certificates:
- Possession of a current CPR, First Aid, AED and Life Guarding certificate required; and,
- Successful completion of the City of Tulsa Parks Department Water Test required.
- Swim instructors must possess current CPR, First Aid, AED and Water Safety Instructing certificates.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Working environment is primarily outdoors and in high humidity. May be exposed to pool chemicals, bodily fluids, heat, and slippery surfaces.
