Mechanical Builder-Engineer
New England Machine Tools, Inc. (NEMTUSA) is seeking an early-career Mechanical Builder-Engineer for its Bristol, CT facility.
This is a full-time, on-site role for someone who wants more than a steady desk job. It is a strong fit for a recent or early-career mechanical engineering professional who wants to build real machines, move quickly, work directly with company leadership, and grow into broad technical ownership early in their career.
This role supports custom CNC grinding machines, automation systems, customer solutioning, internal product development, and hands-on support for active machine builds and delivery. This is not a sit-behind-CAD position. The engineer in this role will move between the shop floor, Autodesk Inventor, customer-oriented technical discussions, and product development work as part of a small, fast-moving team.
Responsibilities
- Create and update 3D models, assemblies, drawings, and bills of materials in Autodesk Inventor for custom machines, design improvements, and new product ideas
- Build, adjust, debug, and improve machine hardware on the shop floor alongside builders and technicians
- Work directly with company leadership on customer solutioning, proposal concepts, rough configurations, and technical input for quotations and feasibility discussions
- Contribute to internal product development by exploring new machine features, mechanisms, options, and related product ideas in parallel with customer work
- Support active project delivery by helping solve design and build issues quickly during assembly, checkout, and release
- Help establish and improve best practices in design, documentation, and the practical use of modern tools, including AI-assisted workflows where appropriate
Qualifications
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field, or expected graduation soon; 0–2 years of relevant experience (internships, co-ops, projects, or early full-time roles)
- Hands-on experience with Autodesk Inventor through school projects, internships, co-ops, or practical work
- Strong desire to build hardware, solve practical mechanical problems, and work close to the action rather than only in CAD
- Comfort working in a small, fast-moving environment with changing priorities and direct feedback
- Interest in machine design, CNC equipment, automation, manufacturing, and prototype-to-production work
- Strong communication skills and willingness to work closely with leadership, builders, technicians, and other functions as needed
- Ability to work on-site in Bristol, CT on a full-time basis
Preferred
- Internship, co-op, club, maker, or project experience involving machines, robotics, fabrication, machine design, or industrial equipment
- Exposure to CNC machines, machine shops, automation, or prototype hardware environments
- Interest in helping improve design processes, documentation, and engineering workflows over time
- Curiosity about AI tools and interest in using modern software to improve engineering speed and quality
Why This Role May Be a Good Fit
- You want to build and ship, not just design on a screen
- You want broad exposure early in your career
- You want to work directly with the owner in a small, growing company
- You are energized by challenge, pace, and ownership
- You like practical engineering work that connects customer needs, product ideas, and machine delivery
Compensation
Competitive salary for an early-career mechanical engineering role, with a structured increase after an initial introductory period based on performance and role readiness.
Work Authorization
At this time, the company is not able to provide immigration sponsorship for this position. Candidates must already be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time, ongoing basis.
