Position Type: Federal Work Study And Non Work Study

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

Student Success Center Tutors provide peer academic support that helps Detroit Mercy students become more independent learners, improve their understanding of course material, and develop effective learning strategies.

Tutoring is offered in both in-person and online formats for many first-year and select upper-level courses. Typical Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct one-on-one tutoring appointments in assigned subject areas.
  • Tutor students in person and/or virtually.
  • Help students understand concepts rather than simply providing answers.
  • Encourage independent learning and critical thinking.
  • Assist students in developing study strategies and academic skills.
  • Maintain professionalism during appointments.
  • Work scheduled hours and communicate with SSC staff.
  • Support students in introductory and some upper-level courses depending on expertise.
  • Use TutorTrac to manage appointments and schedules.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimal qualifications include:

  • Current University of Detroit Mercy student.
  • Strong academic performance in courses being tutored.
  • Faculty recommendation (often required during hiring).
  • Good academic standing -Strong interpersonal skills.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong content knowledge in approved tutoring subjects
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Active listening -Patience and empathy
  • Professionalism
  • Dependability
  • Time management
  • Ability to explain concepts in multiple ways
  • Respect for student confidentiality
  • Ability to foster student confidence and independence

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods while providing tutoring services.
  • Ability to occasionally lift or carry materials weighing up to 15 pounds.

Anticipated Schedule:

  • Monday-Thursday 8:30AM-8:00PM, Friday 8:30-5:00 PM
