Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- The goal of the CHP Peer Educator program is to improve student success in target theory-based courses and in the nursing skills lab in the College of Health Professions.
- Peer Educators provide both in-classroom and out-ofclassroom support to students.
Duties include:
- facilitating learning activities, providing one-on-one and group tutoring, leading review sessions, and providing mentorship and overall academic guidance.
- Candidates must be willing to work weekdays as well as occasional weekends and evening hours as needed.
- CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Peer Educators for Targeted Courses will be assigned to a course and will work closely with the instructor to support students in the class.
- Peer Educators for Tutoring will provide tutoring in major and prerequisite courses in which they earned at least a B. Most Peer Educators perform duties in targeted courses as well as in tutoring.
- Regardless of the specific assigned responsibilities, the position includes training in group facilitation, tutoring, and mentoring strategies.
- Peer Educators should have the ability to help students develop a positive selfconcept; the skills to identify and address the academic challenges of the students by using their own experience, training, and skills; the capability to establish immediate and continuing rapport with students; the facility to continually evaluate and improve their expertise by using a variety of methods; and the ability to evaluate and aid in the continuing development of the Peer Educator program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES: -
- Facilitate individual and learning activities.
- Model successful learning behaviors.
- Display supportive and caring behaviors toward students, faculty, and staff
- Document all interactions with students
- Notify students of upcoming workshops and events
- Attend regular meetings with the Peer Educator team
- Meet regularly with collaborating instructors
- Plan and run weekly review sessions
- Read, understand, sign, and consistently adhere to the Peer Educator Code of Conduct as a condition of continued employment in this roe.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be enrolled at UDM in the College of Health Professions with a minimum of 6 credits.
- For Summer employment, must be enrolled in at least 6 credits for the Fall semester.
- Earned a grade of “B+” or higher in most major courses
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.4 throughout employment period
- Available for 3-10 hours weekly during the Winter and Fall semesters
- Attend training days at the start of each semester (which may be scheduled during school breaks and/or weekends)
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills
- Strong work ethic, initiative, ability to work independently
- Ability to work in groups and to place high value in collaboration
- Maintain confidentiality and exercise extreme diligence with confidential information and materials
- Enjoy talking about the major subject
- Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and students
- Excellent interpersonal skills with a positive attitude
- Endorsement letter from faculty member in your major (emailed to kingyv@udmercy.edu) - WAIVED IF STUDENT WAS RECOMMENDED BY FACULTY MEMBER
Preferred Qualifications (if any):
- Prior experience teaching, tutoring, or mentoring
- Knowledgeable of (or able to obtain information about) student-relevant dates and policies such as, but not limited to, add/drop dates, financial aid, academic standing, curriculum, etc.
- Knowledgeable of other student support services available to students at Detroit Mercy (training will be provided to supplement existing knowledge of Detroit Mercy resources).
