Quality Inspector B - Rail Vehicles

About This Position: Based at our Final Assembly site in Palmdale, CA, the Quality Inspector B will support final assembly of rail cars at the Final Assembly site by ensuring quality inspections and testing are performed per technical specifications for LA Metro's P2550 LRV Modernization and HR5000 HRV Assembly projects.

Primary Duties:

  • Performs inspections on Light Rail Vehicles (LRV) and Heavy Rail Vehicles (HRV) components and welds with skill and experience.
  • Performs inspections on materials, parts, and assembly of rail cars while in production, and documents results per procedures.
  • Recommends dispositions of issues to QA Supervisor and ensures that the finished product meets all regulations as outlined by customer.
  • Reads, understands, and uses procedures and standards for inspections.
  • Investigates and reports on non-conforming material or processes.
  • Document findings in writing via various reports that will serve as legal docs for the production processes. Identify, troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, or software system, and establish a plan of action to resolve reported issue on rail cars 
  • High Potential and Continuity Testing, Megger Testing, Vehicle Functional Test, Vehicle Visual Inspection, Dimensional Inspection, Weighing, Receiving Inspection, Vehicle Acceptance Preparation, Burn-In Testing, Performance Testing, etc.
  • Disconnect and reconnect electrical plugs, connectors, and wires from electrical equipment, components and/or boards in preparation for wiring continuity and dielectric testing.
  • Remove and reinstall access covers and ensures that all nuts and bolts are properly installed and torqued.
  • Ensure that all wires are properly terminated, dressed, labeled, and installed wires at the right location.
  • Produce timely and detailed service reports
  • Verify full system and subsystem functionality of rail car 
  • Install and/or upgrade new hardware or software while ensuring that the work is done correctly and safely 
  • Repair/replace broken-down or damaged equipment
  • Perform visual, mechanical, dimensional, and functional inspection of parts and equipment to ensure conformance engineering drawings and to quality standards and identify non-conformance as necessary. Create Non-Conformance Report (NCR) if needed.
  • Write reports and conduct procedural testing and inspections on LRVs.
  • Maintain documents of all tests pending and completed.
  • Test electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and software related functions of LRV or HRV in a timely manner as established by production schedule.
  • Perform in-process and final inspection and/or installation of electro-mechanical assemblies to assure conformance to specifications, drawings, and workmanship standards.
  • Carry out visual inspections on all electrical/mechanical equipment and components including car body wiring.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics and diagrams.
  • Utilize multimeters, oscilloscope, scales, tape, calipers, micrometer, and other measuring equipment to inspect parts and equipment.
  • Evaluate and recommend changes in methods or procedures to ensure quality of rail cars. 
  • Tracks resource needs and reports needs for required tools or supplies, with justifications.
  • Record complete data findings in reports, trackers, sign off sheets, and other documentation with a high degree of accuracy and detail.
  • Ability to perform water tightness testing of entire vehicle and localized bellows testing. 
  • Perform truck dimensional, spin testing and truck visual inspections. 
  • Adhere to all company policies and procedures, including safety notices.
  • Perform other tasks/duties as assigned. These duties can either be temporary or long term in nature.

Basic Qualifications: 

  • HS diploma.
  • Able to interpret and understand drawings, schematics, diagrams, standards, and procedures with minimal help. 
  • Ability to perform inspections while standing, sitting, kneeling, lying on a creeper, climbing ladders, and wearing a harness.   
  • Must be able to work in physically demanding which requires, climbing, lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 40 pounds.
  • Must have a reliable means of transportation to commute from one location to another as needed.
  • Ability to consistently adhere to company policies and procedures. 
  • Able to work evenings, weekends, and overtime as needed.

Preferred Qualifications (Not Required): 

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Experience working in electrical mechanical environment.
