Intern, Community Engagement

An internship with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting.

The MSFriends Program Intern will work with the MSFriends program team to grow this one-on-one peer connection program. They will focus on matching program participants to well-suited individuals and managing volunteer engagement opportunities through our monthly newsletter, growing the program in impact and quality.

 

They will support the planning, volunteer management, participant engagement opportunities, and administrative duties associated with MSFriends to meet programmatic goals. Through this, they will contribute to the organization's strategic goals of empowering people affected by MS to solve everyday challenges and strengthening the MS movement through more and deeper connections.

 

Duties include implementing MSFriends participant pairing process, documenting programmatic efforts, and building volunteer engagement opportunities.

 

MSFriends Program Description: The MSFriends program is a one-on-one connection program that connects anyone affected by MS for confidential ongoing conversation for up to six months. MSFriends volunteers are supportive, empathetic individuals who can provide solution-focused emotional support to anyone affected by MS.

 

What You Will Do:

Day to Day & Specific Responsibilities

Execute pairing process for MSFriends, one-on-one peer connections program (70%)

  • Gather program applications.
  • Match program participants to well suited pairs.
  • Ensure MSFriends matches are mutually beneficial for volunteers and participants.
  • Manage communications with participants and program volunteers.
  • Documenting the pairing progress through internal systems.
  • Cultivate trust and strengthen stakeholder relationships with program participants and volunteers through timely communication and turnaround.

Manage MSFriends monthly newsletter and spotlights (15%)

  • Customize newsletter content for MSFriends volunteers.
  • Engage volunteers who have not participated in spotlights to conduct interviews and write engaging profiles.
  • Grow spotlights to include participant experience and demonstrate appreciation for the volunteers' contributions to this program.

 

Collaborate with Community Engagement and Administration (15%)

  • Responding to inbox inquiries with information about the program.
  • Supporting the MSFriends team's seasonal volunteer engagement efforts.
  • Provide ongoing feedback to MSFriends leadership regarding to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

What You Will Bring:

  • Currently pursuing a degree as a Junior or Senior in College or any year in graduate school
  • Open to all majors with a preference for the following: Public Health, Social Work, Community Development, Psychology, Non-Profit Management
  • Ability to work 15 weeks, 15 hours per week
  • Demonstrated initiative and motivation.
  • Ability to establish strong collaborative relations and work with others in a cooperative and effective manner.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Minimum Experience:

  • - Experience working with volunteers.
  • Access to reliable internet (required for remote or hybrid positions)
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software for e-mail, document, and spreadsheet creation/management -- specific training will be provided.

This is a remote paid internship available for Spring 2024. The hourly rate for this position is $15, except where local minimum wage exceeds that figure, in which case the hourly rate will be the higher of the two. If you are unable to be paid for this internship due to outside funding or other directives from your educational institution -- please let your hiring manager know AFTER you have been identified as the final candidate.
