Conference Assistants, Residence Life

Position Type: Federal Work Study and Non-Work Study 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

Conference Assistants are students at the University of Detroit Mercy. They are employed by the Office of Residence Life with the University of Detroit Mercy, serving in the special capacity required by the summer housing program. The Director of Residence Life and the Residence Director & Assistant Conference Manager will directly supervise the Conference Assistants.

Conference Assistants are representatives of the University of Detroit Mercy and the Office of Residence Life to all University members and visiting groups and are expected to provide and maintain a high standard of courtesy and customer service to all guests and summer school attendees. Conference Assistants also have the most frequent and direct communication with residential students and have great opportunities to positively contribute to the growth and educational development of individuals in the halls by supporting living and learning communities in the residence halls.

The primary responsibilities of the Conference Assistant are to organize the facility operation of summer operations. This includes assuming responsibility for reporting the cleanliness of rooms, assessing and reporting damages, managing building & room access, supporting the SOAR program as well as the Student Life Office and Dean of Students, administrative responsibilities in the Residence Life Office, and supporting the Assistant Conference Manager. Conference Assistants will also be required to serve a minimum of one night per week and at least one weekend per month on duty to support and implement policies and procedures as outlined within the University of Detroit Mercy Student Handbook. Conference Assistants may be required to work or perform duty during the summer holidays.

  • Attend pre-conference training meetings as scheduled by the Assistant Conference Manager.
  • Attend scheduled staff meetings (these are working meetings that can run 3-4 hours)
  • Complete at least one Health and Safety inspection of occupied residential rooms during each summer term.
  • Summer Conference Assistants will facilitate one fire drill, with the Assistant Conference Manager, during the
  • summer.
  • Aid with the check in and out of summer residential students and conference guests.
  • Assist any guest/resident who desires assistance for residence hall problems or summer conference concerns.
  • Participate in a daily duty rotation and complex-wide rounds during conferences.
  • Cooperate with other staff by being consistent and assertive in enforcing the residence hall and university policies.
  • Confront and document all problems, concerns, and violations of residence hall and university policies.
  • Understand and be responsible for and in compliance with access and proper usage of all master keys.
  • Assist with Residence Life key inventory.
  • Assist with Central Office duties in Residence Life office (8 hours per week).
  • Other projects as assigned or needed by the Residence Life professional staff.

 

Note: $1,600 total for summer term.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • The Conference Assistant is required to reside in the residence halls, throughout their employment.
  • The Conference Assistant appointment is for Summer 2024 only.
  • As is customary for part-time positions, the Conference Assistant will work an average of 20 hours per week.
  • The Director of Residence Life and the Summer Resident Director & Assistant Conference Manager must approve vacations or any periods of time away from campus.
  • Qualified candidates will not have any standing judicial sanctions, which extend beyond the date of appointment.
  • Qualified candidates cannot work more than 20 hours at another job.
  • Qualified candidates cannot take more than 8 credit hours during any summer session.

Physical Requirements

  • Qualified candidates must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.

  • 20 hours/week
