24-02818 Revenue Auditor I

The mission of the Kentucky Department of Revenue is consistently and efficiently administer tax laws and programs to fund public services while providing quality customer service to the taxpayers and tax professionals living and working in Kentucky. The Office of Income Taxation supports this mission by thoroughly examining tax returns for accuracy and providing exceptional assistance to taxpayers and their representatives.

As an entry-level Revenue Auditor I for the Commonwealth of Kentucky, you’ll receive supervisory direction and training needed to independently audit a variety of state tax returns for compliance with Kentucky tax laws and regulations. You’ll also promote voluntary compliance by assisting taxpayers over the phone, in writing, and in person to explain state tax laws and regulations, reporting requirements, and payment deadlines.

Keys to success in this position include being knowledgeable of tax laws, as well as the ability to communicate clearly and concisely to taxpayers. In addition, being meticulous, thorough, and ethical are important qualities to ensure tax returns are reviewed properly.

Additionally, you’ll be responsible for:

  • Preparing records and reports detailing the adjustments made to tax returns
  • Educating and advising taxpayers personally and over the telephone, of their tax liabilities/responsibilities, filing deadlines, payments obligations as outlined by state tax laws, and department policies and procedures
  • Researching tax laws, regulations, and policies
  • Using departmental resources and applications to provide an accurate and in-depth audit of tax returns
  • Recording notes proficiently and accurately into appropriate agency computer systems after auditing returns or during telephone conversations
  • Responding timely and accurately to taxpayer protests of additional tax liabilities or refund denials
  • Moving between computer screens to find information quickly to answer taxpayers’ questions
  • Ensuring the safety and confidentiality of taxpayer information, data, and records

The successful candidate should possess clear communication skills to work with taxpayers in person or over the telephone and in writing, sometimes in confrontational situations.

Additional / Supplemental information:

  • Required to successfully complete a background investigation including an FBI criminal history record check (fingerprint check).
  • Required to comply with all tax laws.
  • Mostly at a desk using a computer and telephone.
  • Some travel for training and education.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree which must include twenty semester hours or thirty quarter hours in pure accounting courses.

 

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: NONE

 

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: NONE

 

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Certification as Certified Public Accountant or as a Certified Internal Auditor will substitute for the required education; OR Experience with a financial institution, corporation, college, university, state, local, or federal government in financial analysis, economic analysis, Kentucky tax administration, financial planning, cost analysis, credit analysis or loan analysis, accounting, or a related field will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis. Two years of professional level tax experience in the audit, review or preparation of excise, corporation, or individual income tax withholding, or property and/or sales tax within a state government Revenue Department or the Internal Revenue Service will substitute for the twenty accounting hours.

Working Conditions

Incumbents working in this job title primarily perform duties in an office setting. Travel may be required.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
