Assistant, Student Life

Position Type: Federal Work Study and Non Work Study.

The Student Life Office provides an environment to encourage the social integration of the student body into campus life thereby providing opportunities for leadership and team-building through student organizations and campus activities. The Student Life Office works closely with other departments within Student Affairs and Academic Affairs on several projects throughout the year, which provides graduate assistants with opportunities to strengthen their skills while promoting recreational development, governance, and social development for current students through involvement in student organizations.  

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

The University of Detroit Mercy Student Life Office is seeking applications for graduate assistants. The position offers an opportunity for current graduate students to gain experience working with Detroit Mercy’s Student Life Office. Responsibilities will include, but are not necessarily limited to the following:

  • Orientation Program Support.
  • Student Engagement.
  • Organization Outreach.
  • Special Event & Activities Support.
  • Marketing & Communications Assistance.
  • Other student related special projects as assigned.

The graduate assistant will work closely with the Student Life Office staff and will report directly to the Assistant Director of Student Life or Director of Student Life, depending on the projects assigned. The graduate assistant will support the mission of the Student Life Office and help students navigate their extracurricular experience at Detroit Mercy. 

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS OF GRADUATE ASSISTANTS

  • Attend individual meetings with their supervisor.
  • Devote 20 hours per week to the position (structure to be determined by supervisor).
  • Participate in collaborative projects with other staff when appropriate.
  • Cultivate and maintain good working relationships with staff, faculty and students.
  • Support College policies and guidelines.
  • Work with staff to develop co-curricular events and services for the area assigned.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
  • Lead the promotion of student life events through the use of social media, print material, and other forms of appropriate communication. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be enrolled in graduate coursework at the University of Detroit Mercy. 
  • Candidates must be able to exercise independent judgment; responsibly manage multiple projects; and communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Anticipated Schedule: 

20 hours per week.
