Peer Educator, College of Health Profession/McAuley School of Nursing

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Peer Educators for Targeted Courses will be assigned to a course or to nursing skills lab, and work closely with the instructor to support students in the class.
- Peer Educators for Tutoring will provide tutoring in major and prerequisite courses in which they earned at least a B. Most Peer Educators perform duties in targeted courses as well as in tutoring.
- Regardless of the specific assigned responsibilities, the position includes training in group facilitation, tutoring, and mentoring strategies.
- Peer Educators should have the ability to help students develop a positive self-concept; The skills to identify and address the academic challenges of the students by using their own experience, training, and skills; the capability to establish immediate and continuing rapport with the student; The facility to continually evaluate and improve their expertise by using a variety of methods and the ability to Evaluate and aid in the continuing development of the Peer Educator program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Facilitate individual and learning activities.
- Model successful learning behaviors.
- Display supportive and caring behaviors toward students, faculty, and staff.
- Document all interactions with students.
- Notify students of upcoming workshops and events.
- Attend regular meetings with the Peer Educator team.
- Meet regularly with collaborating instructor (Peer Educators for Targeted Courses)
- Plan and run weekly review sessions (Peer Educators for Targeted Courses)
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be enrolled at UDM in the College of Health Professions / McAuley School of Nursing with a minimum of 6 credits. For Summer employment, must be enrolled in at least 6 credits for the Fall semester.
- Earned a grade of “B+” or higher in most major courses.
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.4 throughout employment period.
- Available for 3-10 hours weekly during the Winter and Fall semesters.
- Attend training days at the start of each semester (which may be scheduled during school breaks and/or weekends)
- Endorsement letter from faculty member in your major (emailed to kingyv@udmercy.edu) - WAIVED IF STUDENT WAS RECOMMENDED BY FACULTY MEMBER

- Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and students.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with a positive attitude.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience teaching, tutoring, or mentoring.
- Knowledgeable of (or able to obtain information about) student-relevant dates and policies such as, but not limited to, add/drop dates, financial aid, academic standing, curriculum, etc.
- Knowledgeable of other student support services available to students at Detroit Mercy (training will be provided to supplement existing knowledge of Detroit Mercy resources).
Anticipated Schedule:
- Weekdays/weekends
