Teaching Assistant, Dean's Office Engineering Science

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 
 

The College of Engineering & Science is hiring for student assistants to help us in our dual enrollment schools (iDRAW program). We're looking for an Engineering or Computer Science major who can assist high school students in their Computer Science, Mechatronics, and/or CAD courses 2-3 times a week, and occasionally assist with wider outreach efforts. Ideally, students in this role will be upperclassmen with a demonstrated ability and willingness to teach others.

  • Build positive mentor/tutoring relationships and rapport with high school students who are dual enrolled at the university through the iDRAW program at César Chávez Academy, Melvindale High School, and/or other iDRAW schools.
  • Work with iDRAW students one on one or in small groups during class times as needed.
  • Assist high school teachers in facilitating classes.
  • Represent the iDRAW program and the College of Engineering & Science at community and school events.
  • Occasionally assist with recruitment efforts in the College of Engineering & Science which may include college fairs, open houses, and other community events.
  • Complete other tasks and duties as assigned.

 

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have taken at least one computer science/engineering course and passed with a B- or higher.
  • Must demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of STEAM education for populations historically underrepresented in STEAM fields
  • Must have a willingness to learn and facilitate iDRAW's "inquiry-based learning" approach.
  • Must have reliable transportation to get to and from high schools.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with subjects taught and software used is preferable.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Students with prior experience tutoring or volunteering with high school students are encouraged to apply.
