Civil/Structural Engineer - Substations I/II/III

We offer a hybrid 3-2 work schedule (three days in the office, two days of teleworking) to accommodate the need for flexibility.

 

Military service members and veterans with ranks from E5-E9, W1-CW5, or O3-O6, plus appropriate equivalent combination of education and years of experience as outlined below will be considered for this opportunity.

Job Summary

 

This position will be responsible for the site plan and structural design of Dominion’s Electric Transmission and Electric Distribution Substations ranging from 4kV to 500kV.


Primary Responsibilities: 

•    Serve as owners engineer in a multi-discipline team including substation engineering, construction, operations, permitting, surveying, and real estate by overseeing the civil and structural scope of substation projects for both new and existing substations. This includes but is not limited to site grading and stormwater management, structure and foundation design, transformer oil containment, and security barriers.

•    Provide in-house designs for substation structures and foundations.
•    Provide engineering oversite for consultant designs of substation structures and foundations.
•    Assist Substation Engineers and provide civil/structural perspective to substation design for electric conductors and connections, insulators, and substation equipment using civil and structural engineering principles.

•    Provide engineering oversite to civil consultants developing site plans for substation construction and permitting efforts.
•    Coordinate with developer and electric cooperative civil staff to make sure the Dominion Substation site is designed appropriately.
•    Coordinate with internal and external permitting staff for federal, state, and local permitting efforts
•    Coordinate with field staff during construction by reviewing Substation drawings, testing and inspection reports, and RFIs 
•    Coordinate with Transmission Lines and Substation Engineers to scope and execute geotechnical reports and interpret reports for foundation and site plan design.

•    Participate in site visits to support the construction group and/or asset owners.
•    Work with other civil/structural engineers to develop or update substation engineering standards and specifications.
•    Represent the company at the state and county commissions applications/hearings and community open houses. 
•    Represent the company on industry associations conferences.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

 

Engineer I: 0-2 years of relevant engineering experience  (Utility Substations applications) or demonstrated equivalent.

Engineer II: Minimum of three years of relevant engineering experience (Utility Substations applications) or demonstrated equivalent.
Engineer III: Minimum of five years of relevant engineering experience (Utility Substations applications) or demonstrated equivalent.

 

•    Thorough understanding and knowledge of substation components
•    Ability to read, interpret, Substation plan and elevation drawings
•    Knowledge of the structural analysis and  steel structure design
•    Firm understanding of the foundations needed for major substation equipment
•    Knowledge of the reinforced concrete design and foundation design
•    Perform independent research to find innovative and cost effective technical solutions to operational problems.
•    Experience with AutoCAD or Microstation is a plus
•    Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems 
•    Ability to interpret codes, regulations, and practices 
•    Planning, organizational and project management skills 
•    Self-motivator who can work cooperatively in a team environment, but is comfortable independently seeking knowledge and information
•    Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks
•    Strong time management skills with the ability to independently plan and organize work assignments
•    Effective decision-making skills 
•    Strong communication and interpersonal skills
 

Education Requirements

 

Required degree: Bachelor's in civil engineering minimum

 

REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA:
 
For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:

  •  
  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or
  • Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
     

Licenses, Certifications, or Quals Description

•    Engineer in Training (EIT) license is preferred
•    Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus
