Camp Specialist

Summary of Position:  

The Camp Specialist is the front-line person charged with delivering the goals of Camp to each camper. They have the day-to-day responsibility for providing motivation, appropriate personal assistance and a positive Camp experience for each camper. The Camp Specialist will also work with the whole Pine Tree Camp team to engage in program curriculum development and planning to ensure campers are experiencing innovative and exciting programs with the appropriate goals and objectives that align with each of our program areas here on camp.   

Summer Essential Responsibilities: 

Coaching/cuing campers to perform basic aspects of daily living such as personal hygiene. 

Assisting campers with basic needs as appropriate including transferring, dressing, toileting, etc. 

Ensuring that campers are safe at all times and are where they are scheduled to be at various times throughout the day such as meals and program activities. 

Actively work with the whole Pine Tree Camp team to plan and execute camp programming throughout each camp session as well as partnership programs that may be utilizing the campus throughout our summer season. 

Report to swimming periods dressed and ready to be in the water assisting campers or on the dock assisting lifeguards in observing for a safe waterfront environment. Communicate with Unit Leaders for postings for the day. 

Take an active part in the appearance of camp through reporting any broken or damaged facilities or equipment and utilizing our “you see it, you own it” attitude towards the campgrounds. 

Assist the Camp Director with any special events needs throughout the summer seasons. 
 

Qualification; knowledge, skills and abilities: 

Enthusiasm for working with people with disabilities 

Demonstrated Teaching/ Coaching skills and experience 

Previous work history—preferably in a related field or willingness to learn necessary skills 

Willingness and demonstrated ability to provide assistance with personal care and hygiene  

Ability and willingness to live in close quarters with others 

Demonstrated effective communication skills 

Ability to plan and facilitate programming as needed in many different outdoor and indoor settings 

Sustained personal energy sufficient to meet each of the essential functions of the position 

Adaptability and the willingness to be flexible in order to meet the needs on any given day 

Ability to multi-task 

An ability to make sound decisions  

Physical capacity to perform each of the essential duties associated with the role 

Education: 

Must be at least 18 years of age, 16-17 year old’s subject to Camp Director approval 

Completed at least one year of college or comparable experience 
 

Work Environment:  

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is located regularly in an outdoor environment, requiring physical labor and exercise. The employee will engage in projects where lifting and carrying materials in necessary and frequent. There will be exposure to machinery and potentially hazardous equipment, sometimes with a high noise level and exposure to high places accessed by ladders. In the office environment, the employee will experience request interruptions and a moderate noise level on occasion. Occasional computer use is required. The use of Common Protective or Safety Equipment such as Safety Shoes, Glasses, Gloves, Hearing Protection, Hard Hats, or Life Jackets is required.  

Room & Board:  

From June-August, housing is provided in our camper cabins. Employee will be living in close quarters with other employees and the campers in their care during each session. Cabins have a semi-private specialist’s quarters and shared bathrooms. All meals are provided during program sessions.
