Assistant - Mechanical Engineering

Position Type: Federal Work Study and Non-Work Study

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Equipment Maintenance: Assist in storing, maintaining, repairing, and calibrating lab equipment, tools, and machinery to ensure they are in safe and working condition.
  • Student Support: Provide guidance and technical assistance to students on the proper use of tools and equipment, helping them troubleshoot issues and advising on design, operation, and best practices.
  • Safety Compliance: Enforce safety protocols and procedures, conducting regular safety inspections and teaching Safety and Basic Use training modules.
  • Space Organization: Assist in organizing and maintaining a clean, orderly, and efficient workspace, including the storage of tools and materials.
  • Shop Support: Help plan and execute workshops, classes, and events, collaborating with instructors and managing the setup and breakdown of equipment, as well as researching and learning new software and processes.
  • Administrative Duties: Assist the Lab Manager in scheduling, tool inventory, equipment acquisition, etc.
  • Engagement: Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment, encouraging collaboration and knowledge.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of SolidWorks.
  • Experience using the lathe and mill.
  • Intermediate knowledge of machine shop tool and machines.
  • Design experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in using a variety of tools and machinery, including CNC machines, 3D printers, laser cutters, and woodworking tools.
  • Safety Knowledge: Strong understanding of safety standards and best practices in a lab or workshop setting.
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and maintain a well-organized workspace.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot equipment issues and provide creative solutions to challenges.
